Feng shui, which literally translates to “wind-water,” is an ancient Chinese aesthetics system that uses the laws of heaven and earth (astronomy and geography) to help people enhance their lives by getting meaningful “qi,” or energy flow. Feng Shui's uses, methods, and instruments have a long and complicated history, particularly before the invention of the magnetic compass. Modern feng shui aims to place the human-built environment in areas with good qi. The “right place” is thought to be a geographical position as well as a time axis. In Chinese martial arts like kung fu, the exploration and use of energy powers are also fundamental. The Chinese philosophy of yin yang, the theory of the influence of opposing powers on human life, is also a part of feng shui. Many natural dualities — dark and light, female and male, low and high — are seen as embodiments of yin and yang in Chinese thought. In the West, feng shui is most often used in the areas of interior decoration of rooms and houses and exterior building design.
The modes and techniques of feng shui are much too diverse and nuanced to be fully described, but one important factor to remember for Christians is that ancient Chinese feng shui has been reinvented and integrated into the practices of New Age practitioners. Although many reject feng shui as superstitious nonsense and pseudoscience, others can and do become so enamored with the theory that it has a significant impact on their life choices, even going so far as to use it healing instead of modern medicine. The question for Christians is whether we believe that we can create harmony, unity, and order in our lives by manipulating elements and external “powers” around us. According to the Bible, our heavenly Father is the source of peace, which is only possible through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). In reality, if our lives are out of alignment with the Savior, no amount of appealing to inanimate forces can bring peace and harmony. Only through Him will we experience God’s peace that “passes all comprehension” (Philippians 4:4–7).
Christians should be aware that certain feng shui concepts, such as the “I Ching,” are based on Taoist philosophy and are used to decide which areas of a home are positive or negative and how to organize decor and furniture. Although Christians can integrate feng shui concepts into their decorating plans, regardless of their questionable value, Christians should never do so with the purpose of feng shui, which is the manipulation of their environment to produce in their lives what only Christ can provide. It’s almost idolatry to do so. Since our house is not in this world and the kingdom of God is not this existence in this location, there is no such thing as the “perfect spot” on earth for Christians. Christians should instead focus on glorifying God in their homes by submitting their opinions, actions, and acts to Him and striving to become more Christ-like. Only then will we expect to achieve the peace and prosperity that so many people today cannot achieve.
